TESTIMONIALS
What they say about me
I had an ACL, MCL, medial and lateral meniscus repair surgery in may this year. Started my rehab with Steve in July. He is highly knowledgeable and a hands on trainer. Quite often he actually does the work out with me. We have been training together for almost 5 months now. Rehab 3 times a week and strength and conditioning twice a week. I’m already feeling stronger then before my injury and my knee has been improving consistently since day one. I couldn’t be happier with my progress and would recommend him to anyone who’s after serious training.
Steve really listened to what I wanted to achieve (1/2 marathon trail running events), pushed me to do a wider range of training and corrected my technique. I really appreciate his depth of knowledge and the way he explains why each exercise is important...it helps me stayed motivated.
I have been with Coach Stephen for a few months now and without a doubt I can say my overall fitness has skyrocketed. I needed his help to prepare for a selection course where I would be tested to my physical limits. His specific training programs helped me nail the course without injury. I can always rely on him to reply and tweak my program to fit with my schedule and how I am feeling. Can’t wait to see what else we can achieve.
I always have great work with FXV. Steve is knowledgeable and friendly. The workouts are well balanced with a range of exercises. He pushes me but still leaves me with energy to perform at my Jiu Jitsu training. Highly recommend it for injury prevention and improved performance!
Steve helped me prepare for and travelled with me to several international events over 3 years. We got my jumps and throws firing at the same time and I hit several PBs at Gotzis in 2011. I also qualified for the London Olympics and came first in the Australian Championships 2012 in Melbourne under his guidance. Steve pushed me to my limits and intuitively understood what I needed. I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to improve their performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a strength and conditioning workout?
Strength and conditioning is the practical application of sports science. A strength and conditioning workout is designed specifically to improve physical performance in athletic or sporting competition. Strength and conditioning can also focus on injury prevention and enhancing movement.
What does conditioning mean?
It is developing the energy systems to meet the demands of a sport. There are three energy systems.
- Anaerobic: High intensity – short duration
- Anaerobic Lactic: High to medium intensity
- Aerobic: Low intensity – long duration – endurance
Is it worth paying a strength and conditioning coach?
Yes. Strength and conditioning coaches are advanced professionals who specialize in improvement of physical performance. An experienced coach will help you save time, get better results faster and achieve your goals.
How can strength and conditioning improve my sporting performance?
Strength and conditioning develops overall athleticism. It encompasses a wide range of physical qualities such as speed, agility, mobility and endurance.
Specialised athletes repetitively overuse particular parts of their bodies and so injuries often develop. Strength and conditioning reduces the risk, aids in recovery, extends longevity by increasing awareness, efficiency and balance.
How do I choose a strength and conditioning coach?
Check what strength and conditioning experience the coach has had. Do they have experience in your specific sporting field? Have the athletes they’ve coached experienced success?
It may be tempting to choose someone who charges less however, if your coach has proven experience and expertise you are likely to spend less overall to get the results you want and to see those results sooner.

Can I train at home?
Yes. As a Herne Bay resident, Steve offers personal training sessions to Herne Bay and central Auckland locals in the comfort and convenience of their own home. However, depending on your goals he may recommend the use of specific equipment. Steve has access to an elite, pristine and spacious training facility in Auckland CBD which gives you free access during your personal training sessions and provides free onsite parking and shower facilities for your convenience. Do I need to be a member at the gym?
No. Steve has access to a facility in the Auckland CBD which allows you free access during our personal training sessions. The gym is an elite, pristine and spacious training facility with free onsite parking and shower facilities for your convenience.
How do I get started?
Call or text Steve on 0273 398 398 or email mail@stevebuckley.co.nz.
Initially, you will have a consultation (via phone, zoom or in person) so Steve can understand more about your situation and goals. With this information he then tailors your training plan to be focused and progresses towards achieving your goals.
Every session is divided into three blocks. The first block is a warm up including muscle activation and mobility work. The main working block focuses on improving goal specific training ‘qualities’ (strength, speed, fitness, agility etc). Your programme is created with the specific demands of your sport in mind and can be modified to accommodate unexpected variances. The final block promotes recovery and flexibility using breathing and assisted stretching techniques which ensure your body is functioning optimally.
How many times a week should I have a strength and conditioning session?
That depends on your goals. Steve believes performance isn’t defined by working at a high level once, it’s about consistency and structured training allowing you to improve daily. At a minimum you will require two strength and conditioning sessions a week and Steve often recommends additional supervised or unsupervised training sessions. Due to this and the limited number of sessions available Steve’s clients commit to a weekly subscription entitling them to two 50-minutes sessions each week. If you are away Steve will provide a one on one online personal training session during your appointment slot to keep you on track.
We recommend subscribing to Steve’s online personal training programming (link to online personal training) for the additional training sessions required throughout the week. Continuity and consistency will aide your progress.
Can you train as a group?
Yes, if you are all working towards the same goals. Small group training sessions are designed to improve motivation, accountability, fitness results and overall health.
With small group training, you get a superior workout while strengthening relationships and increasing personal accountability – you have fun and stick with it.
Do you provide club or sport team strength and conditioning coaching?
Yes, Steve worked with High Performance Sport New Zealand for eight years as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist delivering world-class support to an array of athletes and sport professionals in swimming, cycling, yachting, as well as in netball, basketball, volleyball and hockey. He spent seven years as the Head Strength and Conditioning Specialist for the NZ Breakers spanning the period in which they won their first NBL Championship in 2011, successfully defended it in 2012 and 2013 and reclaimed it in 2015.

How much does strength and conditioning training cost?
Individuals
For individuals the weekly subscription is $220NZD per week for one on one training which entitles you to two 50-minute sessions each week. The subscription cost is the same regardless of whether you prefer to train at home, on location or at the Auckland CBD gym facility. The subscription cost considers Steve’s experience, expertise and time spent. The minimum subscription is 6 weeks. If you are recovering from an injury or your goals require additional sessions the cost is $110NZD for each additional 50-minute session. Alternatively, we recommend a combination of a personal training subscription and an online personal training programme created (designed around strength and conditioning) and monitored by Steve for the additional sessions.
Steve’s standard (up to 3 sessions per week) online personal training programme costs $25NZD per week. If you are recovering from an injury or your goals require increased monitoring (3 – 7 sessions per week) Steve’s premium online personal training programme costs $35NZD per week. Depending on your goals the minimum subscription starts from 6 weeks.
Small groups (up to three)
For a small group the subscription costs $450NZD per week for strength and condition training for a small group (up to three). This entitles you to two 50-minute group sessions each week. Group sessions require the use of a large space and equipment so these take place in the gym facility in Auckland’s CBD. If you have access to a club gym Steve can work on location however, an additional fee for travel time applies.
Club or Sport teams
Depending on your goals and recommended programme the pricing will vary. Please contact Steve to discuss on 0273 398 398 or email mail@stevebuckley.co.nz
